{Christmas Magic.}

When asked what your favorite part about Christmas is, what do you say? Is it the presents?  The Christmas treats?  The Christmas songs? Santa?  Or the lights? These are all very necessary things at Christmas time, yes, but I have to say that none of these rank at the top of my list. My Christmas favorite is putting all the kids in bed, turning off all of the house lights and sitting by the glow of the Christmas tree. There is something about it that is just serene, beautiful and magical. And this year these moments were made even more amazing as I snuggled little Kate by the tree. (I think Travis feels the same way I do by looking at this photo.)

I hope you all had the Merriest of Christmases!

{Never Grow Up.}

You may remember this little family last fall HERE.  This little guy has grown tremendously in just one year.  When I saw him last, he was just a baby and had the cutest little head of hair.  Now, here he is, grown up and big with his little boy haircut and his tiny tennies that run all over the place.  It made me stop and remind myself that my children are growing at warp speed too and I wish I could capture it and prevent them from growing any older.  The words to one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs came on the radio on my way home from this shoot.

“Your little hands wrapped around my finger
And it’s so quiet in the world tonight
Your little eyelids flutter ’cause you’re dreaming
So I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light

To you, everything’s funny
You got nothing to regret
I’d give all I have, honey
If you could stay like that

Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up
Just stay this little
Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up
It could stay this simple”

-Taylor Swift

{Heather and Andrew.}

Someone once asked me, “Do you only photograph beautiful people because everyone I see on your blog is beautiful!” This got me thinking… and this is so true!  I have met and worked with the most beautiful people there is, made so many friends along the way and have fallen in love over and over again with certain images of a moment during a shoot that made me laugh or smile. I get to show the most beautiful sides of people through photos and words.  I love finding the good in everyone… it’s just my thing.

And speaking of beauty, this couple was no exception. When going through these images, I thought back on the few short hours we spent together and remembered what a good time we had. I still feel like we have known each other for years.

Sometimes love will find you when you least expect it. Sometimes it is with someone who you would least expect to fall in love with. Life has it’s unexpected moments, the bad, the good and the best. Aren’t we all glad when we find that right someone to get us through the perfect moments, along with the ugly ones? This couple was so in love, (completely head over heels in love) and even from the beginning of their shoot, I could feel it. Both of them… hearts of gold, sweet and so sincere. And now, Heather and Andrew, 2011 is your year! Congratulations for starting it out right and I wish nothing but the best to both of you as you give your whole hearts to each other for your whole lives.

{Love, Erin}

{Mothers and Sons.}

We all know that mothers and daughters share the same understanding of princesses, baby dolls and painted fingernails.  It is natural when a father and son bond with getting dirty, wrestling in the living room and throwing the football in the backyard.  It is natural to assume that an expectant mother would want a baby girl over a baby boy, but in a mother’s heart of hearts, this is not always the case.

There is just something so special about the connection between a mother and a son that is hard to pinpoint.  The gentle nature of a mother is craved from our tiny boys from day one, which helps them to thrive.  A mother is a boy’s first love.  A mother is a boy’s first true kiss.  There is a bond between a mother and son that is so real and amazing, so unique and wonderful.  As a mother of two boys, even though we might not connect the same ways as my husband and my boys do, we have our own little “things”.  When I look them right in the eyes, I know this connection and have a feeling that they know it too.  Mothers of boys know how to (lovingly) play rough and dirty, yet soothe their sons aching hearts at the same time.  It is a true gift that we mothers of boys have been given…duo responsibilities.

Watching this mother and her 10 day old son, was no different.  The love between this beautiful mom and her baby was so tender and miraculous to witness…. a beautiful sight.  This is Lesli… my partner in crime (well, when it comes to photographing newborns).  I take her along on every shoot that I possibly can for an extra hand, support and the use of her artsy eye.  I enjoyed the few moments we spent together taking these photos and was honored to be able to meet Sam in his first few days of life.  These photos, to me, are LOVE (at it’s finest).

{Beautiful Light….Photography Trick.}

Here is a thought or two on how to achieve pretty much (what I consider to be) perfect lighting. I am going to say up front that it’s really difficult though… there is a lot of equipment involved… and you shouldn’t even try it unless you are a very advanced professional. Really! Yeah, whatever! We don’t all have to be very advanced professionals to achieve this type of light. If I can do it, anyone can do it, really and truly. Here’s the secret… the instructions are long and detailed so be ready…

Open your garage door!

There, that’s it. Seriously. This is a trick that many already know, I am sure, but wish someone would have told me even back when I used my point and shoot camera. As for the background, you are thinking that your garage isn’t very pretty, right? Well, mine isn’t either. In fact, it’s pretty embarrassing, dirty and completely disorganized. You would never know that this pretty little girl was standing only a foot away from an oil leak (that she pointed out to me with “ewwww” right before this photo was taken.) This particular background is a wooden backdrop that I had made for my newborn shoots that is stored in my garage, but I almost used my long Costco fold-up table as my backdrop as well and that would have worked just fine! Get creative! A long sheet of paper, a sheet, a piece of wood…. any of these things could be used to put behind a sweet little one.

Oh, this girl… Love is what I see when I look at her. Silliness, spunkiness and sweet as can be. She was dressed up in her “party dress” ready for Emma’s Dora party yesterday morning. I literally stopped the minute before getting in the car to snap this photo. So glad I did. I love her expression because it isn’t perfectly perfect. I do not strive for perfection… this only causes me stress because for me, it is unattainable in pretty much everything I try. Her expression is not the perfect, happy smile, but is is HER little smirk that I love.

This photo is for me… forever.
